Peter Evans
Position: Senior Manager, Consumer EcoDesign
Peter Evans is a Senior Manager at ENVIRON and was previously Senior Manager for Environment Europe for Sony's TV business.
Peter is a chemical engineer with 29 years experience in the consumer electronics industry including managing senior management positions in engineering, manufacturing and environment. Key successes included winning the Queens Award for Environment and achieving ISO14001 for Sony’s UK operations.
Peter continues to carry out contract work for Sony and in particular represents Sony as:
- Chair of the Intellect Consumer Electronics Energy Group. Intellect (www.intellectuk.org) is the UK Information Technology Telecommunications and Electronics Association. It is the largest trade association for consumer electronics in the UK.
- Chair of the Energy Savings Trust (EST) Consumer Electronics Energy working group. EST (www.energysavingstrust.org.uk) is the leading UK Government organisation tasked with reducing domestic energy consumption by promoting sustainable and efficient use of energy.
- Intellect Health Safety and Environment Coordinating Committee.
- European Recycling Platform (ERP) WEEE group
Whilst at Sony, Peter was responsible for environmental issues for Sony's TV business in Europe including:
- Research and development of new materials and processes
- Design for the Environment
- Hazardous substances elimination and substitution
- Energy efficiency
- Sustainable production
Peter's primary objective was to bring the experience he had gained in manufacturing and engineering into the design process to reduce the life cycle environmental impacts of TV products. His main approach was to move from end-of-pipe solutions to upstream actions that would tackle the environmental impacts at source.
Working with British Gas, Peter developed one of the first EEC funding schemes for consumer electronics products in the UK. This scheme is one of the most successful company EEC funding schemes in the consumer electronics industry. It has generated over £1 million revenue for use in promotion and research and development of more energy efficient products.
Peter was also responsible for introducing the Energy Savings Recommended (ESR) label for consumer electronics.
Peter has an extensive knowledge of the European consumer electronics industry and represented Sony on several industry environmental committees, including:
- EICTA (European Information Computing, Consumer Electronics and Telecommunications Association)
- Chaired the EICTA Consumer Electronics Energy Working Group
